STONE CITY — The General Store Pub has announced plans to close its restaurant and bar this fall.

In a social media announcement late Sunday, the pub said it plans to close Nov. 1. After that, The General Store will transition to offering private events including weddings, parties and corporate events.

“The General Store Pub cannot thank its staff and customers enough,” the post said. “The Pub has had so many amazing people come through its doors of the years. Everyone’s continued support has been very much appreciated.”

A farewell Halloween party for the popular Jones County establishment is scheduled for Oct. 28.

The building, originally constructed for The Stone City General Store in 1893, previously served as a post office, rail depot and quarry office. In the 1930s, is was used as a meeting place for artists associated with the Grant Wood Art Colony, according to The Stone City Foundation.

Its scenic location along the banks of the Wapsipinicon River was depicted in “Stone City, Iowa,” Grant Wood’s first major landscape painting. Wood painted it in 1930 — the same year as “American Gothic.”
